This wine has been produced since the 16th century in the hilly area whose epicentre is Asti. The opinions on the origin of its name are divergent. Some claim that it is to be found in the dialect verb “grigné”, which means to laugh. For experts and wine specialists, instead, its etymology must be looked for in the vine growing world: the word Grignolino may derive from “gragnole”, seeds that are conspicuous in these grapes.
